it's the annual christmas cocktail party!

HUZZAH! it's finally time for my annual christmas cocktail party! chock full of delicious appetizers, festive decorations, jazzercising dancing and enough cocktails/boozey punch to last 20 people a lifetime. so with that, play this little tune and take a peak at these lovely retro pics to get excited.

(Billy May- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer)

Yes, there will be lil' smokies and no, there will be no 7UP. Sorry to disappoint, kiddos.

Hopefully the conversation is a little more stimulating than this picture may allude to- the punch is there to help.

Moral of this picture: Bringing gifts may yield stolen kisses. Just sayin'...

Mistletoe will be strategically placed. Don't be alarmed if that special someone mysteriously drags you to a corner of my apartment in flustered/nervous anticipation.

in memoriam.

pat's tap.

last night some girlfriends and i went to Pat's Tap, a new restaurant in minneapolis (sisters, if you're reading this, the head chef is charlie schwandt! i think it's the same edina charlie schwandt judging by the picture but i could be wrong). having the same owners as bryant lake bowl and red stag supper club, i knew the food was going to be good, but i didn't know just how good. we started off with a bottle of wine and tried the deconstructed buffalo chicken terrine. absolutely delicious. thin slices of celery, crumbled blue cheese, and a spicy, tender and delicious terrine (which is pretty much a little loaf of chicken). each of us got something different; jen/becca had the muscles, jackie had the AMAZING grilled cheese (cheese, figs, arugula, apple- to die for), mary rose had the black bean burger, and i tried the bacon burger off the recommendation of our favorite bartender at bryant lake bowl. moist, tender and utterly delicious. i also like to try restaurant's cocktails. boy was i NOT disappointed. their old fashioned might be my favorite in the city (granted I haven't been to marvel bar yet!). the secret, i believe, is the cherry bark bitters they used. made the drink light enough where the bourbon wasn't overpowering, and the combination of orange, bourbon, maraschino cherries, cherry bitters and club soda was fantastic. looking forward to attempting to make my own (might have to get one of these). all in all, a great experience and i can't wait to go back!

oh fer cute!

so i stumbled upon THIS lil guy's halloween costume recently. i immediately melted- who doesn't love carl from "UP"? And who doesn't love the cutest little toddler dressed as carl for halloween? so cute. must. have. boy. someday! and in case you can't get enough of this lil guy (his mom is an amazing photographer), check out this little video of their family.

Acting.

We had quite the night of boardgames last evening. We started off with 7 Wonders, a strategic, simulateous-play 7-person game which was lovely. We then moved on to The Resistance, an extremely fun game where everyone selects a card and only 2 are spies (the horror!!) And the rest of the group tries to pass challenges and figure out who the spies are. Long story short, it was VERY fun to try and convince people that I was not a spy when I really was one almost every round. It made me think of how much I enjoy acting/theatrics. If I could do a community theater production, I would. I just think it would be so fun! Maybe I will look into it for the upcoming 2012 season. Le sigh- to be, or not to be; that is the question.

psychological perspectives on happiness and well-being.

last night i went to a lecture/discussion held by the st. olaf college alumni association with vanessa. professor donna mcmillan (the psychology department chair) was speaking on happiness and well-being from a psychological perspective and gave some valuable insights on behaviors which promote happiness and well-being. she began by talking about how happiness or well-being can be influenced by a variety of factors, those factors including circumstances, genetics, personality, etc. she dug into personality a little bit by talking about extroverts vs. introverts and how a person is not just one or the other but how we have different levels of extrovert and introvert in us for different aspects of our personality. extroverts tend to be "happier" people than introverts, the explanation for which, she explained, was that extroverts tend to express more extreme emotion more often, while introverts are more reserved with their reactions to things. where an extrovert would say "that was the best concert ever!" an introvert would say "it was good," even if both people really really enjoyed the show. she talked a little bit about studies she had done to discover how introverts and extroverts experience happiness or what they consider to be "happy," and the results were interesting in that extroverts often need the extreme expressions of emotion to bring themselves up to a level of excitement that introverts may already feel, meaning the introverts have no need for intense expression.

after a few introvert/extrovert discussions, donna proceeded to talk about various practices that have been proven to increase a person's well-being, or state of happiness. they are as follows:
1. Foster your relationships (Nurturing meaningful relationships give your life a sense of purpose and remind you of the people who truly know you, understand you and love you).
2. Be physically active (Not only is being physically active good for your mental state with the release of endorphins, but being healthy and active regulates your body's hormones and mental state, making you feel more confident in yourself).
3. Sleep (Studies have shown that sleep is one of the most important aspects of feeling positive about your life).
4. Do things for others (Philanthropy has a much bigger effect than pleasure; doing something for someone else has far greater emotional rewards than doing something that is pleasurable for you at the moment).
5. Spend discretionary money on experiences rather than material possessions (If you spend your money on a concert, the memory of the experience will live on far longer than a pair of shoes you buy).
6. Approach things you want, more than you avoid things you don't want (Vanessa gave the best example for this; she knows she wants to be a teacher so she's focusing on becoming a teacher rather than focusing on how she really hates her current job).
7. Seek flow experiences: absorbed engagement (Experiences that you are actively engaged in yield an emotional sense of purpose and happiness. For me, a flow experience is playing piano. It's easy for me to do, but once I start playing I get completely wrapped up in the music, the speed, the dynamics, the pedal, etc. I find more emotional satisfaction from playing the piano than I would watching TV, for instance, because I'm mentally/emotionally engaged in the experience).
8. Cultivate gratitude (Keep a gratitude diary and write in it once a week. Try and write about different things that may have happened that day or things that have made you feel particularly happy that week. A good resource for your gratitude journal is OhLife, an online resource where you can respond to an email to say something you're thankful for and in a month or two they will send you an email saying "2 months ago you were thankful for this" or they will send you notes asking "how is your day?" A really neat free internet service).
9. Savor positive experiences (Make positive experiences last as long as possible by reminiscing about them, being thankful, building memories, sharpening your perception of the experience, etc.)-
10. Be careful about analyzing positive events (Don't overanalyze an evening out with your friends that was great, because you will inevitably find the imperfections in the evening and that positive experience will be lost).
11. Don't engage in social comparison (In today's Facebook-driven social culture, this is very hard to do. But if you can be content with your life and yourself, you will lead a happier life).
12. Consider your goals and motivation: intrinsic/identified rather than extrinsic/coerced (Make sure your goals are YOUR GOALS, not goals you feel pressured to achieve or you feel make you look better to others).
13. Discover your strengths and intentionally use them (We just did a team building exercise at work about finding your strengths and we've had several meetings to discuss our strengths and what it means in our professional and personal lives. Focusing on my strengths really has had a positive impact on me in the workplace).
14. Attend to spiritual/religious aspects of your life (Even if you aren't super religious, find things in your life to hold sacred, whether it's a treasured relationship, marriage, great job, etc.)
15. Increase the frequency of positive sensory (Identify things that make your senses happy- sight, taste, smell, touch, etc.- and be sure to have several or more ways to experience those things throughout the day. If you are not experiencing them frequently, look at ways to change your daily routine. For more information on the sensory awareness inventory, search George W. Burns).
16. Psychological significance of nature (Professor McMillan's main research is focused on what place nature plays in our well-being. She believes there is a human connection to nature which all humans need varying degrees of to lead a happy and healthy life. I completely agree!!)

So there you have it. Some interesting facts in there! If you want to talk more about any particular point, let me know. Would be happy to discuss :)

bourbon-soaked cherries.

one of my favorite drinks is a manhattan. whiskey, sweet vermouth, bitters, maraschino cherry and usually a twist of orange peel= YUM. one of the best manhattans i've ever had was made with maker's mark whiskey and instead of super sweet maraschino cherries, they had maker's mark bourbon-soaked cherries. talk about delicious! boozy but still slightly sweet...such a delicious addition. so, i went on the hunt for a drunken cherry recipe. i found something better during my search! cherry bourbon liquor WITH bourbon-soaked cherries. double-whammy! so without further ado, the recipe (from foodwoolf.com):

Cherry Bourbon Ratios

* Fill a quarter of your canning or jelly jar with pitted cherries (a quarter of a pound for an 8-ounce jar). Be sure to capture as much cherry juice in that container as possible.

* Fill the rest of the jar with a great tasting bourbon, like Elmer T. Lee

* Shake the container and leave out on a shelf (at room temperature) for a month. Lightly shake your jar every couple of days. After three weeks to a month, taste your results. If you like a sweeter flavor, add a small amount (one fifth to your ratio) of sugar to your mixture.

SUGGESTIONS:

Pour a splash of this macerated bourbon on ice to experience the subtle flavors, or add an equal amount of Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth to your glass for a mind blowing (and slightly sweet) Manhattan. Finish your cocktail off with one of the bourbon infused cherries for an unsweetened, bourbon soaked Brooks cherry garnish. Use your cherry-infused bourbon to make a super-charged version of my Master Cherry Cocktail.

OTHER IDEAS:

If you have a sweet tooth and love the classic Aviation cocktail, I highly recommend buying up an extra bundle of cherries and soak them in a jar with some Luxardo as well. The sweetness of the cherry liqueur infuses the fresh cherries with an almost candy flavor, which makes for a delightfully sugared fruit garnish, without adding any sugar!

When it comes, will it come without warning
Just as I'm picking my nose?
Will it knock on my door in the morning,
Or tread in the bus on my toes?
Will it come like a change in the weather?
Will its greeting be courteous or rough?
Will it alter my life altogether?
O tell me the truth about love.

i would love to climb with you.

JENNY AND THE BERRIES (1861)

On a sunny summer morning;
Early as the dew was dry,
Up the hill I went a berrying;
Need I tell you-tell you why?

Farmer Davis had a daughter,
And it happened that I knew,
On each sunny morning,
Up the hill went berrying too.

Lonely work is picking berries,
So I joined her on the hill;
"Jenny, dear," said I, "your basket's
Quite too large for one to fill,"

So, we staid-we two- to fill it,
Jenny talking-I was still-
Leading where the hill was steep
Picking berries up the hill.

"This is up hill work," said Jenny;
"So is life," said I; "shall we
Climb it up alone, or Jenny,
Will you come and climb with me?"

Redder than the blushing berries
Jenny's cheeks a moment grew,
While, without delay, she answered,
“I would love to climb with you.”

bus buddies.

one of the great things about taking the bus is seeing and getting to know the regulars. i find these random people fascinating. so without further ado, i will share some of my favorites:

"typical target," aka TT. this woman is such the stereotypical target employee; carries no less than 4 bags every day, all of which have some sort of target bullseye on them. clearly her lunch bag, work bag, purse, gym bag, etc. she also is your typical midwest corporate girl; nice watch, lots of make-up. today she was talking to a guy (who i'm guessing is a coworker of hers) about her recent trip to california with some college girls since they are all turning 30 in 2011. apparently they did a 7 hour vineyard tour and got drunk in the first hour. she also seems to have some sensitivities to marriage since she was talking smack about one of her friends who is "just getting married to be married but at least she found a husband which is more than i can say" (followed by an awkward self-conscious giggle). if she follows the typical target female employee psychographics, she's probably trying to find a corporate target husband or earn her "mrs" in business school. no ring for TT, but i bet she wants one.

"hipster plaid couple," aka HPC. the HPC have been riding the bus with me since the beginning. i only recently found out that they live in the building 2 doors down from me. the HPC is a little older; probably mid-late thirties. tall man with large chunky eyeglasses and a short asian woman who always wears plaid and has an adorable smile. they are married and i wonder what their jobs are since they take the 4 downtown. today it was freezing and i stopped in to get a little hot tea at the coffee shop a block away. lo and behold, HPC bopped on in! we exchanged friendly minnesotan smiles and a "goodmorning." while i was fixing my tea, i heard her tell the barista that she was pregnant! i was awkwardly excited for HPC! i wanted to congratulate them but held off for fear of sounding too weird and creepy. they are just so adorable and the man is so chivalrous towards her- holds her hand to help her on the bus every day, shields her from the harsh winter wind, stands so she can take the open seat. i really like them and perhaps will strike up a conversation to actually know their names someday. in the meantime, i'm happy for their little bun in the oven.

"frosty lawyer," aka FL. i started seeing FL about a month or two ago. we usually are on the morning and evening bus together so i get a double dose each day. one of the first days i encountered FL, she was having a very loud chat with another random. what i gather is this: she is VERY proud of the fact that she is a full-on lawyer, she is also very braggy about her schooling and the fact that she is the youngest and only female at her firm (can't remember which firm it is for the life of me). she has a very severe face and look and is pretty plain. she tries to have glimpses of color and funky fashion, but it just looks awkward and forced. my guess is she would like to loosen up a little bit but just has a hard time doing so. i also saw what she was listening to one day; kanye west's "my beautiful dark twisted fantasy." a little surprise there- didn't think she would be into rap, but i stand corrected. FL seems like a nice gal, probably early 30s. i imagine she's fought her way to where she is on wit and confidence and now that she's got her career in place is probably lonely for a little companionship but i can see her turning down any guy that came her way to focus on work.

more to come, but those are the most intriguing. ahhh people watching; what a glorious game you are.

april 14.

april 14th has been a rough day throughout history; from the titanic hitting the iceberg, to lincoln getting shot, to black sunday in kansas during the great depression, to the oklahoma city bombing. here's hoping this april 14th will be a littler sunnier. and all these events beautifully captured in gillian welch song.

the garden.

Oh light, shine down on me.
You know what I need, shine down on me.
Shine down on the garden, shine down on the garden.

Sweet earth, alive under me.
You know what I need, cradle me like the sea.
As I lay in the garden, as I lay in the garden.

Flowers and beautiful tree;
standing high above me, oh the things you have seen.
Tell me a story in the garden, tell it to me in the garden.

Sky above, so vast and so deep.
You know what I need, rain down on me.
Rain down on the garden, rain down on the garden.

Oh light, surround me.
Sweet mystery, in everything I see.
Come and find me in the garden, come and find me in the garden.

wilderness.

Wilderness is a spiritual necessity. An antidote to the high pressure of modern life, a means of regaining serenity and equilibrium. I have found that people go to the wilderness for many things, but the most important of these is perspective. They may think they go for the fishing or the scenery or companionship, but in reality it is something far deeper. They go to the wilderness for the good of their souls.

happy monday!

what a weekend.

this weekend was random, to say the least. random but fun. i had the day off on Friday so i finally picked up this kitchen cart from IKEA that i've been waiting for. FINALLY i have a bar in my apartment! i'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.

that afternoon i went down to northfield to spend the afternoon with my little sister. we had fun going into "antiques of northfield" to find a few gems such as vintage pink glass, some awesome vintage liquor decanters, a little pocketwatch pin, and a few other things. we had a great time!

on saturday i spent the afternoon with my 94 yr old grandma, noni. per her suggestion, we had a little glass of wine around 3:30 because "it's five o'clock somewhere!" spending time talking with her was JUST what i needed on saturday. i was in a bit of a funk for some reason, and talking with her about life and culture and interests was just the sort of pick-me-up i needed to kind of reinvigorate me. i always love hearing noni's thoughts on different situations in life or her comments on the ways of the modern world. she's quite the remarkable lady and i'm lucky to get to spend time with her :)

yesterday i was criticized for my taste in books which was annoying. i walked up to this local used book store and found my selections (historical war fiction, mostly, but a few that ive always wanted to read too) and the uppity store clerk said "are those for your grandpa?" to which i replied "absolutely not- these are for me." thanks for judging me, hipster man. shows you to judge me by my cover! ha. i also saw the movie "jane eyre" with my coworker friend which was delightful- dark, moody, dramatically romantic, sigh. highly suggest it! the night ended with trivia with anne, jim and vanessa. while we didn't know much about smurfs and had a tough time with the ncaa basketball logos, we had fun. the perfect end to a random but fulfilling weekend.

welcome beyond.

as i was scraping 3 inches of snow on top of 2 inches of solid ice off my windshield this morning, i couldn't help but think how nice a real vacation would be- someplace warm, with sun and a beach and maybe the necessity for 75 spf sunscreen. my apartment building also decided heat wasn't necessary this week meaning i could see my breath last night and was shivering uncontrollably. so i took a mini vacation by checking out welcome beyond, a website that features really unique, beautiful and picturesque vacation spots from around the world. le sigh. if only i had spring break again!

when i listen to this i'm immediately transported to a warm beach with the sun hanging low in the sky...take a listen and daydream.

new find.

i stopped by this adorable new tiny boutique right by my apartment the other day and i immediately saw THIS poppy oil painting. it just jumped out at me. i kind of collect poppy artwork mostly because i love seeing how different artists interpret "poppy red" and how these delicate flowers are drawn/painted/photographed, etc. so you can imagine my surprise when this large, colorful painting is just staring me in the face. i asked the store owner if there was any way she'd sell it (thinking it would be way too expensive) and she said she found it in the back of a thrift store and would sell it to me for $50. um, SOLD. And so this beautiful beast is sitting on the floor in my apartment waiting to be hung. i'm thinking it will go over my bed? that's really the only place it could go and i think it will look fantastic in there. if i get it hung this weekend i'll post a pic of the final product. hope it looks ok!

time for a party.

yes, my vintage christmas cocktail party was a big hit and loads of fun. but as spring approaches, i think it's time to have another raucous party. holly golightly's parties are always good inspiration as the punch bowl is always full, good bossa nova music inspires crazy cha-cha dancing and people are always laughing and meeting each other and having a good time. i do love a good bossa nova album- maybe i will have a retro tiki-themed party; psycho suzi style with super strong tiki drinks, little umbrellas and some amazing bossa nova to top it all off. nothing says warm weather like a tiki party! would you come?
